Plants, Animals and Monsters of the Lost World


The shear scale of all created things, relative to the wreckage we know today, is what characterizes life in the Lost World. A pressurized, highly oxygenated atmosphere along with a single, uniform season and high humidity encouraged huge and wild overgrowth. Shielded from the majority of harmful cosmic radiations and undiluted in their primal genetic condition, the life-forms of the world grew to enormous size and had comparatively long life-spans.

Every living thing in the Lost World grows in time to a comparatively enormous size. From gnats to bats to beasts not seen sine before the cataclysm, the heroes will find themselves often and suddenly in peril when outside the protective walls of the great cities. In addition to this, animals before the rainbow covenant had no fear of human beings. It was not uncommon for them also to speak, some noble and some deceptive, but since the spirit was granted to man alone it is generally presumed that when they did, they were mere spokesman for mightier spiritual beings. Each grouping and kind of animal behaves in relatively predictable manners. Some less savory than others.

Birds -unpredictable, easily spooked, tame
Fish -generally unattached, cowardly, curious
Lizards -aggressive, deceptive, powerful
Mammals -generally kind, helpful, indifferent
Insects -hateful, chaotic, aggressive, swarming

Outside the great walls, communication towers also provide a disruption field that repels most animal life within a radius of 2 and a half leagues. They are thus constructed along common travel and trade routes to better ensure the safe passage of travelers. The gifts of knowledge, discernment and miracles may all be used in creative ways by wise heroes to control, attract, repel or communicate with animal life in the Lost World. Although the mist-soaked jungles and forests of Newerth commonly stand hundreds of cubits thick, the plant life has no spiritual sensitivity or communication abilities. It may, however, be manipulated by miracles and blessed or cursed by the gift of hands.

Living Legend. Tangible Myth.

All common myth has its roots in a common truth. In the dim memories of mankind lie the strange and supernatural beings of the antediluvian world. These memories survived the cataclysm and evolved over time to become the legendary monsters and curiosities of our various cultures around the world.


To the Chinese, there is the lucky dragon. To the Europeans, there is the fearsome dragon. To the Cherokee, there is the Thunderbird. To the Navajo, there is the Skinwalker. To the Greek, there is the Minotaur. To the Egyptian, the phoenix and to the Hindus and Buddhists, there is the Naga. In the terrestrial environment of the Lost World, many kinds (or species) of animal created in the beginning thrived until the cataclysm, but could not continue to survive with the same forms in the shattered, alien environment they found afterward (the one we call home).

It is important to note, that the word ‘dinosaur’ did not exist until around 1842. We have nonetheless remembered these animal somehow for thousands of years and have been digging up there remains presumably since tie immemorial. What did we call them before we knew them as ‘dinosaurs’? From all over the world come stories and paintings and sculptures depicting these giant, lizard-like creatures inhabiting land, sea and air. They never ‘dominated the earth’. From the beginning, man was given dominion over the Earth and all that was in it. As it turns out, not surprisingly, truth is truly stranger than fiction!
